Algeria is the largest country in Africa and the Mediterranean basin. Over 80% of its territory is occupied by the Sahara Desert, and it houses some of the world’s most extensive fields of sand dunes and isolated volcanic massifs. Algeria contains seven UNESCO World Heritage sites, including an unmatched concentration of exceptionally preserved, non-commercialised Roman archaeological cities and rock art networks dating back 10,000 years.
Discover Algeria
The northern rim of Algeria is defined by fertile mountain ridges that drop into the Mediterranean. Along this coast sit sprawling archaeological parks like Tipasa, where Roman ruins stand directly over the blue surf, and Djemila, a mountain-fortress Roman city built into rugged terrain. These sites remain entirely uncommercialised, allowing visitors to walk the original stone streets without barriers or crowds.
Moving south across the Atlas Mountains leads to the northern edge of the Sahara, where the M’zab Valley forms an architectural oasis. Each of the five towns is built around a central mosque that doubles as a defensive fortress. The uniform, pastel-colored earthen houses are engineered to maximise shade, capture seasonal floodwaters, and maintain social privacy according to centuries-old egalitarian laws.

The far south is defined by extreme geographical isolation around Tassili n’Ajjer and the Hoggar Massif. This landscape is a labyrinth of eroded sandstone arches, deep canyons, and tall orange sand dunes. Accessible primarily via expedition vehicles and guided by local Tuaregs, this region preserves thousands of rock paintings that depict elephants, giraffes, and cattle grazing across a long-vanished green Sahara.
