Togo is a narrow West African nation stretching roughly 600 kilometres north from the Gulf of Guinea but measuring less than 150 kilometres wide. This compact, vertical geography contains an unmatched concentration of ecological zones, moving rapidly from coastal lagoons and palm-fringed beaches to forested plateaus and northern savannas. Togo is a primary global centre of Vodun (Voodoo) culture and houses the fortified mud-tower settlements of the Batammariba people, offering deep, intact anthropological traditions entirely free from mass commercial tourism.
Discover Togo
The rolling hillsides of northeastern Togo hold Koutammakou, where the Takienta mud houses are engineered using clay, straw, and wood, sculpted by hand to form thick walls that naturally insulate against the intense Sahelian heat. Each tower evidences a well-developed architectural system where the lower floor houses livestock and cooking hearths, while the upper open-air terrace handles grain storage and bedrooms.
Along the coast, the maritime city of Lomé functions as an active commercial port and a critical repository of West African animism. The Akodessewa Fetish Market is a key institutional site for the practice of Vodun, where practitioners source materials for protective charms (gris-gris). Priests operate small consultation rooms along the market perimeter, utilising centuries-old medicinal and spiritual protocols to treat physical and psychological ailments.

Moving inland, the flat coast rises sharply into the Atakora Mountain range near Kpalimé. This humid, forested zone is the agricultural heart of Togo, home to extensive butterfly populations and dense stands of mahogany and teak. The mountains offer an environmental escape from the humid coast, providing rocky trails that pass through rural Ewe villages where pottery and wood-carving guilds remain central to the local economy.
