Village on the Water

The aquatic community of Ganvié is a historical adaptation to environmental and military pressures. Everything in the village, from markets to schools and restaurants, moves via hand-carved wooden pirogues navigating shallow channels. The buildings are constructed from rot-resistant ebony wood and bamboo, standing firmly in the lakebed to sustain a self-contained fishing economy that has thrived for centuries.

Coast of Remembrance

Further west along the coast, Ouidah acts as an open-air historical ledger. The city balances its dark history as a collection point for captive Africans with its identity as a global focal point for Vodun, an officially recognised religion in Benin. Travellers walk the final two-kilometre path taken by millions toward the beach, where memorial arches stand alongside sacred forests and the Temple of Pythons.
