Best Time to Travel: June–October

Kenya is the historic birthplace of the modern commercial safari, its very name derived from the Swahili word for journey. It serves as the primary stage for the Great Wildebeest Migration, an annual hydrological and survival circuit where over 1.5 million herbivores cross crocodile-dense rivers. Split down the centre by the Great Rift Valley, Kenya ranges from the 5,199-metre equatorial glaciers of Mount Kenya down to a 536-kilometre Indian Ocean coastline, providing an unmatched concentration of megafauna alongside ancient Swahili trading history.
Discover Kenya
The northern extension of the Serengeti, the Maasai Mara National Reserve, is a continuous savannah plateau. The local economy and wildlife management are deeply integrated with the Maasai people, who manage community conservancies surrounding the reserve. This network allows predators like lions, cheetahs, and leopards to roam unfenced across ancestral grazing lands, maintaining a critical baseline for large-scale carnivore research.
Moving inland, the terrain breaks into the jagged walls of the Great Rift Valley. Here, Mount Kenya rises as a stratovolcano, its jagged, snow-capped twin peaks of Batian and Nelion challenging technical mountaineers. The surrounding national park transitions from dense bamboo forests into Afro-alpine moorlands, supporting unique, giant rosette plants and endemic wildlife found only at high altitudes.

North of the equator lies Samburu and Shaba National Reserves, an arid, volcanic landscape carved by the Ewaso Ng’iro River. This desert-like terrain holds species entirely distinct from the southern savannas, known as the Samburu Special Five: the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx, and the long-necked gerenuk antelope that browses on its hind legs.
