Rwanda is a landlocked East African nation known as the Land of a Thousand Hills due to its highly fractured, mountainous terrain. It contains roughly one-third of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population along the volcanic Virunga Massif. Rwanda has positioned itself as a global leader in high-end ecotourism and urban sustainability, implementing strict plastic bans and a nationwide community cleanup program (Umuganda). Its compact geography allows travellers to move from montane rainforests to open savannahs within a few hours’ drive.
Discover Rwanda
The Volcanoes National Park dominates Rwanda’s tourism landscape. The park’s boundaries protect steep bamboo zones and afro-alpine meadows that climb toward the summits of Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke. Tourism here is heavily regulated through a strictly capped permit system, directly funding community development and ensuring the long-term habitat security of the mountain gorillas.
Nyungwe National Park protects an exceptionally dense cloud forest canopy in the southwest. A major highlight is the 160-metre-long suspension canopy walkway, hanging 70 metres above the ravine floor, which gives researchers and travellers direct eye-level access to the forest’s complex avian and primate stratification.

The western edge of the country is defined by the deep waters of Lake Kivu, a high-altitude inland sea surrounded by steep terraced hillsides producing high-grade Arabica coffee. To the east, the topography flattens completely into the low-lying wetlands of Akagera National Park, where a labyrinth of papyrus-ringed lakes supports large populations of hippos, Nile crocodiles, and herds of plains game.
