Best Time to Travel: October–March

Ghana is a West African nation defined by its central role in pan-African history, its well-preserved coastal fortresses, and its status as the historic heart of the Ashanti Empire. It features a 540-kilometre Atlantic coastline and contains Lake Volta, the world’s largest artificial reservoir by surface area. As the first sub-Saharan nation to achieve independence from colonial rule (1957), Ghana is the global epicentre for the African diaspora heritage movement, known for its dense tropical rainforests with monarchical traditions.
Discover Ghana
The Central and Western regions are characterised by a palm-fringed shoreline holding immense historical weight. Cape Coast Castle stands directly on the Atlantic surf, its dark underground dungeons contrasting with the whitewashed colonial architecture above. The site functions as a global pilgrimage destination, centred around the iconic Door of No Return, which has been symbolically inverted to welcome the global African diaspora back to the continent.
Moving inland from the coast leads directly into the moist evergreen forest of Kakum National Park. The park is highly distinct for its canopy walkway, which relies on native tree species like the Silk Cotton to support a network of seven interconnected viewing platforms. This high-altitude vantage point allows researchers and travellers to spot rare mona monkeys, forest elephants, and hundreds of bird species that rarely descend to the jungle floor.

The northern half of Ghana opens into flat, dry savanna parklands centred around Mole National Park. This is the country’s largest wildlife sanctuary, famous for its population of exceptionally peaceful savanna elephants that can be tracked on foot during morning walking safaris. The region is culturally defined by its distinct Islamic architecture and traditional round mud-brick homesteads, showcasing a complete environmental and architectural shift from the forested south.
