Ethiopia is an East African nation defined by a distinct evolutionary and cultural trajectory. It is the only African country that successfully resisted European colonisation, retaining its Ge’ez script, its own calendar system, and independent dynastic histories. Geographically dominated by the Ethiopian Highlands, which generate 80% of the Nile’s total water volume, the country ranges from alpine mountain peaks down to the lowest, hottest volcanic depressions on Earth, serving as the anthropological cradle where humanity’s earliest hominid ancestors were discovered.
Discover Ethiopia
The highlands of the Amhara region hold the UNESCO-listed city of Lalibela. Unlike conventional structures built from stone blocks, these churches were excavated by digging deep trenches into monolithic bedrock and then chiselling outward to reveal detailed pillars, windows, and vaulted ceilings. Biete Medhane Alem is the largest monolithic carved church in the world, while Biete Ghiorgis is carved in the shape of a perfect, isolated Greek cross and remains an active pilgrimage site for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians today.
The Simien Mountains National Park is a massive plateau deeply eroded by millions of years of rainfall, leaving behind jagged peaks, deep valleys, and sheer vertical drops of over 1,000 metres. This high-altitude ecosystem is the exclusive home of the Gelada, often called the bleeding-heart monkey due to the bright red patch of skin on their chests. They live in massive social groups of up to 500 individuals, moving calmly across alpine meadows to forage for grass.

In contrast to the historical monuments of the north, the semi-arid Lower Omo Valley in the south is a cultural preservation zone. It is home to over a dozen distinct, localised pastoralist and agricultural tribes, including the Mursi, Hamer, and Karo peoples. These communities maintain highly specific ancestral traditions, body-painting techniques, scarification rituals, and lip-plate ornamentations that remain central to their independent social identities.
