Uganda is an East African nation defined by an intense convergence of geographic zones, where the savanna ecosystems of the continent meet the dense West African rainforest. It houses roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population and is the geographical source of the Victoria Nile. Despite its relatively small landmass, Uganda contains Africa’s highest mountain range—the Rwenzoris—and acts as a high-density haven for over 1,000 avian species, representing half of Africa’s total bird population.
Discover Uganda
The southwestern interior is anchored by Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, an isolated primordial jungle that survived the last ice age. Tracking the habituated gorilla families requires ascending through steep ridges tangled with giant ferns and bamboo. Further north, Kibale National Park forms a continuous forest corridor that holds the highest density and diversity of primates in Africa, sheltering 13 distinct species including over 1,500 wild chimpanzees.
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest protected wilderness, split in half by the Victoria Nile. Below the explosive 7-metre gorge, the river widens into a calm alluvial channel, providing a critical habitat for immense schools of hippos, Nile crocodiles, and rare, prehistoric-looking shoebill storks. The surrounding plains transition into classic palm-studded savanna, supporting lions, leopards, and Rothschild’s giraffes.

Running along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Rwenzori Mountains rise sharply from the Albertine Rift. Unlike Kilimanjaro or Mount Kenya, this is a massive block of uplifted rock crust rather than an old volcano. The trails pass through surreal bog networks dominated by giant lobelias and groundsels, leading to a rugged glaciated core that remains one of the most challenging mountaineering expeditions on the continent.
