Saint Helena is an isolated volcanic British Overseas Territory positioned in the South Atlantic Ocean, more than 2,000 kilometres from the nearest mainland. Formed by two volcanic systems rising three miles from the ocean floor, the island compresses extreme, highly contrasting ecosystems into just 122 square kilometres. Historically functioning as a crucial mid-oceanic maritime crossroads for the East India Company and a secure zone of geopolitical banishment, Saint Helena preserves an extraordinary ecological baseline, holding over 500 endemic species found nowhere else on Earth.
Discover Saint Helena
The approach to Saint Helena reveals imposing, barren volcanic cliffs that drop into deep oceanic trenches. Nestled tightly within a narrow ravine between these crags is the capital, Jamestown. The town preserves a dense grid of Georgian architecture anchored by The Castle (a fort constructed in 1659) and the imposing trajectory of Jacob’s Ladder, which cuts directly up the rock face to access the historic military installations on Ladder Hill.
On a high, wind-swept plateau lies Longwood House, the heavily altered villa where Napoleon lived out his final exile. Maintained as a historical museum by the French government, the estate preserves the exact layout, period furniture, and private gardens designed by the deposed Emperor to evade his guards. A short distance away is the silent, green clearing of the Valley of the Tomb, where he was buried until his remains were repatriated to Paris in 1840.

Away from the historic interior, Saint Helena’s clear, low-current coastal shelf is a biological oasis in the open Atlantic. The island features eight accessible shipwrecks dating from the 17th to the 20th centuries, now encrusted with endemic corallines. This unique maritime isolation ensures an ecosystem of high water clarity, where residential pods of pantropical spotted dolphins reside alongside massive leviathans in an unpolluted blue arena.
