The Ennedi Massif dominates northeastern Chad, acting as a massive natural fortress in the desert. The landscape is defined by natural stone towers and arches, some rising over 120 metres high. Within its deepest corridor lies Guelta d’Archei, where camel herds have gathered for centuries to drink from black, sheltered waters, their calls echoing off vertical cliffs that shield them from the intense Saharan heat.

In the country’s south, the desert opens into the rich floodplains of Zakouma National Park. This ecosystem supports a dense concentration of Central African megafauna, including Kordofan giraffes, lions, and thousands of red-billed queleas that move in cloud-like formations. Zakouma’s strict security model has transformed it into a safe haven, allowing elephant populations to rear calves without threat, reversing decades of crisis.
