Morocco is a North African kingdom and the primary gateway between Europe and Africa. It is one of the few nations with extensive coastlines along both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, separated from Spain by just 14 kilometres at the Strait of Gibraltar. Split by the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, Morocco transitions sharply from fertile coastal plains into the world’s highest sand dunes in the Sahara, preserving thousands of years of Amazigh (Berber), Arab, and Andalusian history.
Discover Morocco
The cultural core of Morocco is found inside its historic fortified cities. The medina of Fes el-Bali is a labyrinth of over 9,000 narrow alleyways where donkey carts remain the only viable method of transport. Here, the Chouara Tannery operates as it did in the 11th century, utilising stone vessels filled with natural dyes to process leather, surrounded by minarets and historic Islamic colleges (madrasas).
South of the High Atlas ridge, where Mount Toubkal reaches North Africa’s highest point at 4,167 metres, the landscape drops into the arid Ounila Valley. Here stands Aït Benhaddou, an example of earthen architecture constructed from organic clay and straw. This fortified site protects a maze of residential houses and granaries pressed against a steep hillside, functioning as a vital defensive bastion.

Further east, the road terminates at the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga, where wind-shaped sand ridges rise up to 150 metres high. This hyper-arid wilderness contrasts with Morocco’s western edge, where coastal towns like Essaouira feature 18th-century stone sea walls built by European military engineers, framing a whitewashed fishing port that handles active blue-boat fleets daily.
