Best Time to Travel: April–October

Botswana is a landlocked nation that houses the Okavango Delta, the world’s largest inland delta system. Instead of flowing into an ocean, the Okavango River empties directly into the sands of the Kalahari Desert, creating a 15,000-square-kilometre seasonal oasis in an otherwise hyper-arid basin. To protect this fragile ecosystem, Botswana enforces a strict low-volume, high-yield tourism model, purposely limiting lodge capacities to maintain one of the lowest environmental footprints and highest concentrations of free-roaming elephants on Earth.
Discover Botswana
The heart of Botswana’s ecosystem is the Okavango Delta and its protected core, the Moremi Game Reserve. Here, travellers move through shallow, reed-lined channels using mekoro (traditional dugout canoes) poled by local guides. This quiet method of transport allows proximity to rare sitatunga antelopes, reed frogs, and high concentrations of African wild dogs and leopards that hunt along the island fringes.
Bordering Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, Chobe National Park is defined by its massive river system. The park’s ecosystem supports immense herds of herbivores that rely on the permanent water source throughout the winter dry season. Boat-based safaris allow travellers to watch large elephant herds swim completely submerged across the deep river channels to reach grazing islands.

South of the wetlands lies the arid interior, dominated by the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans. For most of the year, this landscape is a barren, glittering crust of salt where ancient baobab trees—some over 1,000 years old—stand as the only landmarks. In the wet season, the filling of the pans attracts tens of thousands of flamingos and zebras, starkly contrasting the permanent green of the northern delta.
