Best Time to Travel: June–October

Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa and the global centre of the Great Wildebeest Migration, a continuous 800-kilometre calving and survival circuit. It contains both the highest point in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the deepest lake on the continent, Lake Tanganyika. With over 32% of its territory legally protected within national parks and reserves, Tanzania maintains the highest concentration of large mammals per square kilometre on Earth, anchored by completely intact prehistoric volcanic ecosystems.
Discover Tanzania
The volcanic highlands of the north are Tanzania’s primary geographic draw. The Serengeti dominates this circuit, where the landscape is so vast that the name translates from Maa as “endless plains.” This ecosystem connects directly with the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where wildlife and traditional Maasai pastoralists coexist on multi-use lands, allowing cattle to graze alongside migratory herds on the crater rim.
Rising sharply out of the northern scrublands, Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant stratovolcano composed of three distinct cones: Shira, Kibo, and Mawenzi. Because it sits just 340 kilometres south of the equator, its snow-capped peak is a unique meteorological anomaly. The mountain requires no technical climbing skills to summit via routes like Machame or Lemosho, making it the world’s most accessible high-altitude expedition.

The eastern border terminates at the Indian Ocean, anchored by the Zanzibar Archipelago. The main island, Unguja, functions as a cultural transition zone where the spice trade legacy remains active. Stone Town’s labyrinth of alleyways opens onto old Omani fortresses and sultanate palaces, leading directly to white sand beaches and marine conservation zones like Mnemba Atoll, known for green sea turtle nesting sites.
