Best Time to Travel: November–April

The Central African Republic (CAR) is a landlocked nation positioned at the exact geographical centre of the African continent. It marks the transition zone where the northern dry sahelian savannas meet the dense equatorial rainforests of the Congo Basin, the world’s second-largest tropical wilderness. Free from standard commercial tourist infrastructure, CAR remains an extreme conservation frontier, preserving the planet’s highest concentrations of elusive forest megafauna alongside traditional BaAka hunter-gatherer societies.
Discover Central African Republic
The undeniable heart of Central African Republic’s wilderness value is Dzanga Bai. Fed by underground mineral springs, this sandy clearing acts as a giant social and nutritional hub for Loxodonta cyclotis (the distinct, smaller forest elephant with straight downward-pointing tusks). Visitors sit quietly on a wooden viewing platform at the tree line, watching complex social interactions, mating rituals, and vocalisations that are completely obscured anywhere else by the dense jungle canopy.
The surrounding Dzanga-Sangha reserve is one of the premier locations for viewing the western lowland gorilla. Unlike mountain gorillas, these primates move rapidly through high, tangled canopies and thick swamps. Tracking them requires hours of navigating through dense lianas and mahogany trees, guided directly by the acute auditory and visual tracking skills of BaAka scouts who identify subtle bough snaps and feeding remnants.

In contrast to the forested south, the northern and eastern sectors of the country open into rugged, wet savanna parks like Manovo-Gounda St. Floris National Park. This massive UNESCO site is defined by the flow of the Aouk and Vakaga rivers, creating vast alluvial plains that host massive concentrations of hippos, waterbirds, and large herbivores during the dry season, despite facing ongoing regional conservation enforcement challenges.
