Equatorial Guinea is a Central African nation defined by its unusual geographical partition and sovereign history. It is the only Spanish-speaking nation in Africa, having been a colony of Spanish Guinea until 1968. The country is completely split between Río Muni, its continental mainland territory wedged between Cameroon and Gabon, and Bioko Island, a volcanic outpost located 160 kilometres to the northwest in the Gulf of Guinea. Bypassed by mainstream international travel, its oil-funded infrastructure provides direct access to volcanic peaks, Spanish colonial towns, and primary rainforests.
Discover Equatorial Guinea
The cultural and political anchor of the country is Bioko Island. The island is dominated by Pico Basilé, a massive 3,011-metre shield volcano that looms over Malabo’s preserved 19th-century Spanish architecture, including its neo-Gothic stone cathedral. The island’s southern edge descends precipitously into rugged, roadless coastlines where cascading waterfalls drop directly onto beaches, and heavy equatorial mist sustains an isolated environment for seven distinct species of rare, forest-dwelling monkeys.
In contrast to the islands, the mainland block of Río Muni is defined by the sweeping valleys of the Crystal Mountains and the broad Mbini River. Here, Monte Alén National Park protects a massive 1,400-square-kilometre expanse of primary equatorial jungle. This protected sanctuary functions as a corridor for central African megafauna, providing an uncommercialised habitat for forest elephants, chimpanzees, and a resilient population of western lowland gorillas.

Further out into the Gulf of Guinea lies Annobón, a tiny 18-square-kilometre volcanic island that is the nation’s most isolated provincial outpost. Discovered on New Year’s Day in 1472, this rugged island is surrounded by deep oceanic trenches. Its small, traditional population lives in a micro-society centred around small-scale fishing, where an extinct central volcanic crater has transformed into a mist-shrouded freshwater lake completely cut off from the modern world.
