Best Time to Travel: June–September

The Republic of the Congo, also called Congo-Brazzaville, is a West-Central African nation situated directly along the equator. Covered by over 65% primary tropical rainforest, it is a stability anchor for the northern Congo Basin. Congo-Brazzaville has a stable, low-density travel environment, specialising in low-impact luxury ecotourism. The country contains the planet’s highest concentration of western lowland gorillas and features a network of river systems and swamp forests.
Discover Republic of the Congo
The heart of Congo’s tracking infrastructure is centred around Odzala-Kokoua National Park. The park is defined by its bais, like Lango Bai and Romani Bai, where the dense rainforest splits into wide, marshy clearings. These sites are social hubs for wildlife. Forest elephants, sitatunga antelopes, and forest buffaloes gather here daily to consume mineral-rich mud, while western lowland gorillas forage along the grassy forest edges.
In the far north lies Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park, an ecological time capsule. Because the park is surrounded by protective logging concessions that strictly control human transit, it remains one of the most secure wilderness zones in Africa. Navigating this forest requires walking along elephant pathways and wading directly through shallow rivers under a closed, multi-tiered canopy of mahogany and limba trees.

Where the Congo Basin meets the sea, the landscape transitions into the coastal savannas of Conkouati-Douli National Park. This reserve stretches from the Atlantic surf directly into inland rainforests, protecting marine habitats used by leatherback sea turtles and dolphins alongside terrestrial zones used by wild chimpanzees. This coastal rim is anchored by Pointe-Noire, the country’s industrial port hub, which contrasts with the slow, green-canopied pace of the interior.
