Egypt is a transcontinental Northeast African nation bridging Africa and the Middle East via the Sinai Peninsula. It is defined by the Nile River, which cuts through the hyper-arid eastern Sahara to form a fertile valley that birthed one of humanity’s earliest and most centralised civilisations. Egypt possesses the world’s most dense concentration of intact monumental stone antiquities, spanning over 5,000 years of Pharaonic, Ptolemaic, Coptic Christian, and Islamic history along a single geographical axis.
Discover Egypt
The boundary where Cairo’s urban edge meets the Western Desert is dominated by the Giza Plateau. This archaeological complex contains the three main pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, alongside the Great Sphinx. The scale of these structures is matched by their astronomical and mathematical precision, oriented almost perfectly to the cardinal points of the compass.
Further south along the Nile lies the ancient city of Thebes, modern-day Luxor. The east bank holds the massive Karnak and Luxor temple complexes, connected by the famous Avenue of Sphinxes. The west bank guards the Valley of the Kings, where deep limestone tunnels shield the burial chambers of Egypt’s imperial rulers, preserving thousands of square metres of hieroglyphs that retain their vivid original pigments.

Near the southern border stands Abu Simbel, a political statement in stone engineered to project the power of the pharaoh over ancient Nubia. The Great Temple’s entrance is flanked by four colossal, 20-metre-high statues of Ramesses II seated on his throne. The inner sanctuary is engineered so that twice a year, on February 22 and October 22, the morning sun travels down the 60-metre-deep rock-cut hall to illuminate the statues inside.
