Best Time to Travel: May–October

Zambia is a landlocked southern African nation defined by three massive river systems—the Zambezi, Luangwa, and Kafue—and the world’s largest sheet of falling water, Victoria Falls. It is the birthplace of the walking safari, a style of deep-wilderness tracking created here to prioritise foot travel over vehicle tracking. With over 30% of its landmass protected within national parks, Zambia remains an uncrowded frontier characterised by raw river systems, high predator densities, and immense alluvial floodplains.
Discover Zambia
The southern border is anchored by Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya), where the Zambezi River drops into a basalt chasm. On the Zambian side, visitors can walk across the Knife Edge Bridge through dense rainforest spray or swim in the natural rock formation of Devil’s Pool directly at the edge of the abyss during low-water months. Downstream, the river calms, transforming into the Lower Zambezi National Park, where elephants swim across deep channels to reach islands facing Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools.
The northeast is dominated by the South Luangwa National Park, a wild valley carved by the meandering Luangwa River. As the river shifts course during the seasonal floods, it leaves behind oxbow lagoons that concentrate immense populations of hippos and crocodiles. The valley floor supports an incredibly high density of leopards and endemic species, including Thornicroft’s giraffes and Crawshay’s zebras, which are tracked during daily walking expeditions.

Covering over 22,000 square kilometres, Kafue National Park is Zambia’s oldest and largest reserve. Its northern sector features the Busanga Plains, a seasonal wetland that dries into vast savannahs attracting massive herds of red lechwe, puku, and lions known for climbing trees. Further west lies Liuwa Plain, an exceptionally remote park managed in partnership with local communities, preserving a flat, treeless horizon where cheetahs and wild dogs hunt across pristine plains.
