The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a central African giant containing the vast majority of the Congo Basin, the second-largest tropical rainforest on Earth. It is the only nation on the planet where you can find all three subspecies of African great apes—mountain gorillas, eastern lowland gorillas, and bonobos—within a single border. Defined by its massive river systems and the active volcanic chain of the Albertine Rift, the DRC remains a high-stakes conservation frontier, preserving the continent’s oldest national park and its most volatile geological landscapes.
Discover Democratic Republic of the Congo
Virunga National Park is the focal point of the DRC’s tourism recovery. The park is characterised by its shifts in elevation, allowing for the coexistence of alpine meadows and tropical jungles. The most iconic expedition involves a steep ascent of Mount Nyiragongo, where hikers stay in summit shelters overnight to witness the glowing red intensity of the lava lake as it illuminates the crater walls in total darkness.
In the highland forests of Kahuzi-Biega National Park, the eastern lowland gorilla survives as a distinct evolutionary lineage. These gorillas have wider faces and more massive frames than their mountain cousins. Habituation efforts here allow for small-group tracking through dense bamboo and primary forest, providing a direct look at family structures led by immense silverbacks.

Let’s do it! Perhaps you already know what you want to see and do, perhaps you don’t. Either way, we’ll create the best DRC tour for you.
Continue your journey with more carefully curated destinations, each offering its own unique experiences, culture, and unforgettable moments.
South of the main river bends, the Salonga National Park protects the largest tropical rainforest reserve in Africa. This isolated, roadless wilderness is the sanctuary for the bonobo. Because of the extreme difficulty of access, much of this region remains a living laboratory where wildlife populations, including forest elephants and Congo peacocks, exist with almost no human interference.
