Best Time to Travel: Spring (mid-March–May) & Autumn (mid-September–November)

Turkmenistan is one of the most isolated and visually distinct nations in Central Asia, with the Karakum Desert covering 80% of its territory. It contains the glowing Darvaza gas crater and the white marble and gold-leaf skyline of its capital, Ashgabat. It is a nation of strictly preserved neutrality, ancient Akhal-Teke horse breeding traditions, and the massive ruins of Merv, once the largest city in the world.

Rebuilt after a 1948 earthquake, the capital holds the world record for the highest density of white marble-clad buildings (over 540). The city is defined by monumental landmarks like the 600-tonne gold-leafed Independence Monument and the world’s largest indoor Ferris wheel. At the Altyn Asyr (Tolkuchka) Bazaar, vendors trade world-renowned Ahal-Teke carpets and Telpek sheepskin hats across a 150-hectare desert market site.
Merv contains five distinct archaeological cities, featuring the 12th-century Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar with its double-domed brickwork. In the north, the 14th-century capital of Konye-Urgench is home to the 60-metre Kutlug Timur Minaret, the tallest in Central Asia. These sites represent 4,000 years of urban history, from the Bronze Age palace of Gonur Depe to the final outposts of the Khwarazmian Empire.

Located in the heart of the 350,000-square-kilometre Karakum Desert, this 69-metre-wide crater was formed during a 1971 Soviet drilling accident. The Door to Hell has burned continuously for over 50 years, fuelled by a permanent methane leak from a natural gas pocket. Campers stay in nearby nomadic-style yurt camps, where the crater’s orange glow illuminates the desert floor and the sky remains free of light pollution.
