The Falkland Islands are a remote South Atlantic archipelago consisting of two main islands—East and West Falkland—and over 700 smaller islets. Located approximately 480 kilometres off the coast of South America, the islands are a self-governing British Overseas Territory defined by rugged, treeless moorlands, deep-water fjords, and white-sand beaches. Their isolated environment supports a massive biomass of sub-Antarctic wildlife, including five species of penguins and the world’s largest population of black-browed albatrosses, existing alongside a high-latitude sheep farming culture.
Discover Falkland Islands
Stanley was laid out in the 1840s and remains the islands’ main port and community hub. Points of interest are the Historic Dockyard Museum and 19th-century waterfront buildings. Battlefield stops can be included on private guiding.
Volunteer Point supports the islands’ most accessible king penguin colony alongside large gentoo and Magellanic groups. Day trips operate under strict path and distance rules to protect grass swards and nesting sites.
West Point Island and nearby Steeple Jason together hold among the largest black-browed albatross colonies on Earth, where birds soar over Devil’s Nose and the rims of other cliffs.
