Best Time to Travel: October–March

South Georgia is an isolated, crescent-shaped sub-Antarctic island in the South Atlantic Ocean, roughly 1,300 kilometres southeast of the Falkland Islands. Administered as a British Overseas Territory, it has no permanent human population and is over 50% permanently covered by massive glacial ice fields. Bypassed entirely by commercial transport infrastructure, the island is heavily protected as a marine sanctuary, sustaining the densest and most monumental concentration of seabirds and marine mammals on Earth.
Discover South Georgia
The northern bays of the island have wide glacial outwash plains left behind by retreating ice walls. The king penguins occupy this terrain in St. Andrews Bay year-round due to their 14-to-16-month breeding cycles, meaning vast fields of brown, fluffy chicks stand directly alongside adults dressed in orange and blue plumage.
Nestled inside the sheltered waters of Cumberland East Bay is Grytviken, the heart of the Southern Ocean whaling trade. The site is preserved as an open-air ledger, where massive, rusted blubber cookers, iron whale-oil tanks, and listing scuttled harpoon vessels stand starkly against a backdrop of green tussock grass and snowfields.

The southern tip of the island has the vertical rock walls of Drygalski Fjord. This deep-water marine trench is bordered by cliffs that descend into waters hundreds of metres deep. Expedition vessels can navigate to the faces of advancing tidewater glaciers that continuously fracture, dropping slabs of blue ice directly into the sub-Antarctic surf.
