Standing at 2,381 metres, Santa Ana (Ilamatepec) is the country’s highest peak. The summit trail ascends through cloud forest to a 0.5-kilometre-wide crater featuring a steaming, turquoise acid lake. From the rim, you have a 360-degree view of the Izalco Lighthouse of the Pacific volcano and the 26-square-kilometre Coatepeque caldera, a volcanic lake formed by the collapse of a massive prehistoric cone.

This 36-kilometre highland corridor connects five towns rooted in Pipil-Maya heritage. In Juayúa, the weekend Feria Gastronómica serves local specialties like puyaso and chicharrón, while Ataco is defined by large-scale murals and textile looms. The route is at 1,200 metres, providing the ideal climate for Strictly High Grown (SHG) coffee estates and the seasonal blooming of wild white flowers that give the path its name.
