Best Time to Travel: Dry Season (November–April)

Guatemala is the centre of Maya civilisation, where 2,000-year-old jungle temples coexist with Indigenous highland cultures. It is a destination of massive vertical scale, home to the UNESCO-listed city of Antigua and the 60-metre pyramids of Tikal. From the volcanic crater of Lake Atitlán to the turquoise limestone pools of Semuc Champey and the active eruptions of Volcán de Fuego, Guatemala offers an unfiltered look at the history and geology of the Mesoamerican highlands.
Discover Guatemala
Once the seat of Spanish colonial power, Antigua is a UNESCO site defined by Baroque architecture and 16th-century ruins like the Convento de las Capuchinas. Sitting at 1,500 metres, the city is flanked by the 3,760-metre Agua Volcano. Visitors can explore jade refineries processing local nephrite or tour 150-year-old coffee estates situated on the volcanic slopes of the Panchoy Valley.
Situated in a volcanic caldera, Lake Atitlán is ringed by twelve villages where Tz’utujil and Kaqchikel Maya traditions prevail. In San Juan La Laguna, cooperatives use the jaspe tie-dye technique with indigo and madder root, while Santiago Atitlán houses the syncretic shrine of Maximón. The lake reaches depths of 340 metres, making it the deepest freshwater body in Central America.

Tikal was the dominant Maya superpower during the Classic Period (200–900 CE), encompassing over 3,000 mapped structures. The site is anchored by Temple IV, a 65-metre limestone pyramid that offers views across the Maya Biosphere Reserve. The surrounding rainforest is a primary habitat for howler monkeys, keel-billed toucans, and ocellated turkeys, all visible from the ancient Great Plaza.
