Best Time to Travel: Dry Season (November–April)

Honduras is the primary gateway to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral system in the world, and the southern frontier of the ancient Maya Empire with most detailed hieroglyphic records of pre-Columbian history. It is a country where high-altitude cloud forests and 16th-century silver mining towns transition into a Caribbean coastline defined by English-speaking Bay Islands with spots for deep-sea diving.
Discover Honduras
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Copán served as a major political centre from 426 to 820 CE. It features the Hieroglyphic Stairway, which contains over 2,000 individual glyphs—the longest inscribed text in the Americas. The site is famous for its 3D high-relief stelae depicting the city’s 16 rulers and a preserved Great Ball Court, while the Macaw Mountain sanctuary nearby has reintroduced scarlet macaws to the surrounding forest.
Roatán, Utila, and Guanaja provide direct access to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, located just metres from the shore. Roatán is known for its Hole in the Wall dive site and 40-metre vertical drop-offs, while Utila is a global hub for whale shark sightings and affordable PADI certifications. The islands maintain a distinct Afro-Caribbean and English-speaking culture and feature extensive coral gardens, hawksbill turtles, and eagle rays.

Rising from sea level to 2,435 metres, Pico Bonito is one of Honduras’s most rugged parks, containing five distinct ecosystems. The Cangrejal River forms its eastern boundary, providing Class III and IV whitewater rapids for rafting through massive granite boulders. The park’s dense rainforest supports over 400 bird species, including the turquoise-browed motmot, and provides a corridor for elusive apex predators like the jaguar and margay.
