Best Time to Travel: Dry Season (November–April)

Nicaragua has 19 active volcanoes and the largest freshwater lake in Central America. Experience the intact 16th-century Spanish streets of Granada and the youngest volcanic landscapes in the region at Cerro Negro. You can observe the lava lake at Masaya, hike the dual-volcano island of Ometepe, or access the Caribbean barrier reefs of the Corn Islands. It is a country for travellers seeking colonial architecture and active tectonic sites.
Discover Nicaragua
Founded in 1524, Granada retains its Moorish-colonial layout and clay-tile roofs. The city borders Lake Nicaragua, the region’s largest freshwater basin, where the 365 volcanic Isletas provide a habitat for white-faced monkeys and migratory ospreys. These islands were created by a massive debris avalanche from the 1,344-metre Mombacho Volcano.
León, the country’s political and artistic centre, features the UNESCO-listed Basilica Cathedral, the largest in Central America. Just 25 kilometres away, the 728-metre Cerro Negro remains the most active cinder cone in the region. Its lack of vegetation allows for a 41-degree descent on wooden sleds over black basaltic ash, reaching speeds up to 50 km/h.
