Guyana is the only English-speaking nation in South America, with over 85% of its territory covered by pristine Amazonian rainforest. It contains Kaieteur Falls, the world’s largest single-drop waterfall by volume—five times higher than Niagara Falls—and the Rupununi Savannah, one of the last great wildernesses on Earth. Guyana is defined by community-led tourism where indigenous Macushi and Wapishana peoples serve as primary stewards of a landscape that remains largely roadless and undeveloped.
Discover Guyana
Georgetown’s coastal grid retains grand timber landmarks built from native greenheart and purpleheart hardwoods. The Gothic Revival St. George’s Cathedral stands 43.5 metres high, anchored by a massive timber frame that requires no structural steel. The all-iron Stabroek Market, manufactured in Liverpool and shipped across the Atlantic, operates beneath a 23-metre clock tower, while the ornate, gingerbread-style City Hall remains a masterwork of Victorian mock-Tudor design.
Plunging into a sandstone gorge, Kaieteur Falls drops 226 metres over a sheer basalt lip, discharging an average of 660 cubic metres of water per second. Located within a 63,000-hectare national park, this Guiana Shield plateau isolates a unique microclimate. The misty canyon floor is home to the endemic golden rocket frog, which lives its entire life cycle inside the giant tank bromeliads lining the gorge.

This 371,000-hectare living laboratory protects a critical wildlife corridor where the Guiana Shield meets the Amazon Basin. The four suspension bridges of the Iwokrama Canopy Walkway allow researchers and travelers to walk among the crowns of giant Mora trees. This undisturbed canopy shelters 800 bird species, including the rare Guianan Cock-of-the-rock, and provides a protected hunting ground for the continent’s largest jaguar population.
