Best Time to Travel: May–September

Peru is the heart of the Inca Empire and one of the world’s six cradles of ancient civilisation. It contains 28 of the planet’s 32 distinct climate zones, compressing a hyper-arid Pacific desert coastline, the 6,000-metre peaks of the Andes, and the deep Amazon Basin into a single national territory. Driven by this extreme biodiversity and thousands of years of agricultural history, Peru has also emerged as South America’s premier culinary capital, using endemic ingredients found nowhere else.
Discover Peru
The southern highlands are cantered on Cusco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas. This region serves as the base for the Inca Trail, a 43-kilometre stone highway that crosses high mountain passes before terminating at the Sun Gate of Machu Picchu. The valley floor is shaped by the Urubamba River, where ancient terrace networks like Moray—used by the Incas as an agricultural laboratory—are still functional today.
Peru’s narrow coastline is an absolute desert punctuated by fertile river valleys. The capital, Lima, sits on the edge of Pacific cliffs, serving as the country’s modern political and culinary core. Further south, the desert conceals the Nazca Lines, where monumental figures like a 90-metre spider and a 135-metre condor remain perfectly preserved due to the region’s complete lack of wind and rain.

Often overlooked, northern Peru holds older archaeological complexes than the south, including the adobe city of Chan Chan—the largest pre-Columbian city in the Americas—and the cliffside fortress of Kuélap. East of these mountain ranges, the terrain drops sharply into the lowlands around Iquitos, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon, where the Amazon River officially forms at the confluence of the Marañón and Ucayali rivers.
