Best Time to Travel: December–April

Venezuela is a country of extreme geological records, containing the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall and the longest Caribbean coastline of any single nation (2,800 kilometres). It is defined by the Guiana Shield’s tepuis—massive, flat-topped table mountains that rise vertically out of the rainforest and host entirely isolated ecosystems. From the hyper-diverse flooded plains of the Llanos to the northernmost ridge of the Andes, Venezuela isolates some of the oldest geological formations on Earth beside an expansive marine territory.
Discover Venezuela
The southeastern interior is anchored by Canaima National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site the size of Belgium. The landscape is dominated by quartz-sandstone tepuis that date back over two billion years. Rivers stained black by decomposed plant matter feed immense lagoons and waterways, acting as the sole transport routes for indigenous Pemon guides leading travellers toward the base of Auyán-tepui.
Further east, the forest opens into the rolling grasslands of the Gran Sabana. This plateau provides the only trekking access to Mount Roraima, a sheer-sided table mountain whose summit is a labyrinth of black sandstone formations, carnivorous plants, and endemic black frogs that cannot hop. The mountain’s vertical cliffs isolate it completely from the savannah floor below.

Northern Venezuela transitions sharply into the Cordillera de la Costa and the Mérida Andes, where Pico Bolívar reaches 4,978 metres. This mountain spine sits directly adjacent to the Caribbean coast, creating microclimates where alpine paramos drop down toward colonial coffee towns and coastal cloud forests like Henri Pittier National Park—a critical migratory bottleneck for millions of birds annually.
