Suriname is the smallest independent nation in South America, yet it features the highest percentage of forest cover in the world, with 93% of its territory comprised of Amazonian rainforest. It is the only country outside Europe where Dutch is the official language. Suriname is defined by an extraordinary demographic makeup where no single ethnic group forms a majority, resulting in a culturally dense landscape where synagogues and mosques stand harmoniously on the same streets.
Discover Suriname
Paramaribo’s 17th-century grid pairs Dutch colonial brickwork with native basralocus timber framing. The waterfront is anchored by the star-shaped Fort Zeelandia and the Presidential Palace, built from brick ballast shipped from the Netherlands. Nearby, the all-wooden Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral stands 44 metres tall, its interior lined entirely with unpainted Lebanese cedar, while the surrounding streets follow the original 1683 Dutch canal drainage system.
Accessible only by motorised korjaal canoes, riverside settlements like Pikin Slee and Gunsi preserve autonomous tribal territories. These communities maintain 18th-century Saramaccan Maroon governance, where kapitens (village chiefs) rule via traditional council systems. The lanes are lined with tembe—intricate geometric wood carvings on doors and paddles—and echo with the syncopated Apinti talking-drum rhythms rooted in West African resistance.

This 12,000-hectare park sits on a 500-metre-high bauxite plateau, serving as a sanctuary for eight primate species, including Guianan bearded sakis and red howler monkeys. Trails plunge into deep ravines to reach the 10-metre drop of Irene Falls, while the eastern ridgetops offer sweeping views across the 1,560-square-kilometre Brokopondo Reservoir, which submerged a vast swath of primary forest following its 1964 hydroelectric damming.
