Best Time to Travel: Spring (April–May) & Autumn (September–October)

Armenia lies between Europe and Asia. It is a country were Christianity, Persian empires, and Soviet influence intersect. It has 3,000-year-old archaeological sites, volcanic highlands, Silk Road fortresses, early Christian monasteries carved into cliffs, and mountain landscapes rising from the Caucasus plateau. Visit Yerevan’s Republic Square, hike around Lake Sevan, and see Mount Ararat from the walls of Khor Virap Monastery.
Discover Armenia
Founded in 782 BCE, Yerevan predates Rome. Its centre around Republic Square shows Soviet-era pink-tuff stone architecture, while the Cascade Complex links modern art spaces to city views. The Matenadaran Institute holds over 23,000 illuminated manuscripts, some dating to the 5th century.
Garni’s 1st-century CE Hellenistic temple, dedicated to Mihr, the sun god, is the only Greco-Roman colonnaded temple left in the Caucasus. Nearby, Geghard Monastery (4th–13th centuries) is partly hewn from rock and houses relics believed to include the Spear of Destiny.
Khor Virap, near the Turkish border, stands above the underground cell where Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned in the 3rd century CE before converting Armenia to Christianity. The monastery’s courtyard offers Armenia’s best view of Mount Ararat.
