Best Time to Travel: Summer (late May–early June) & Autumn (mid–late September)

Montenegro packs gorgeous coastlines and mountain landscapes into a country smaller than Sydney’s state region. In a single day, you can swim in the Adriatic, stand above alpine lakes, and stop at highland monasteries, villages, stone fortresses, and Ottoman-era towns in between. Walk the length of Kotor’s medieval walls, sail across the Bay of Kotor, and drive along the mountain roads of Durmitor National Park.
Discover Montenegro
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kotor sits in a fjord-like bay ringed by limestone peaks. The town’s walls climb to St. John’s Fortress, overlooking terracotta rooftops and the waterfront. Inside, visit St. Tryphon Cathedral (12th century) and the Maritime Museum housed in a Baroque palace.
Cetinje, the old royal capital, preserves 19th-century embassies, monasteries, and museums documenting Montenegro’s independence. Above the town, Lovcen National Park contains the Mausoleum of Petar II Petrovic-Njegos (built 1974), reached by a staircase of 461 steps with sweeping Adriatic views.
Montenegro’s coast combines Venetian architecture with quiet coves. Perast’s twin islets (Our Lady of the Rocks and St. George) are accessible by boat. Budva’s Old Town mixes medieval walls with sandy beaches, while the Lustica Peninsula hides olive groves and small harbours.
