Best Time to Travel: Spring (May) & Early Autumn (September)

Bosnia and Herzegovina bridges Central Europe and the Mediterranean. It is where Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Slavic influences meet. Learn about the country’s journey to independence, visit mountain towns and Ottoman stone bridges, walk across the rebuilt Stari Most in Mostar, shop at Sarajevo’s old bazaar, and hike among medieval tombstones in the Dinaric Alps.
Discover Bosnia and Herzegovina
Founded in the 15th century, Sarajevo has Ottoman mosques, synagogues, Orthodox churches, and Catholic cathedrals within walking distance. The Bascarsija quarter has copper workshops, spice stalls, and traditional coffeehouses. The nearby Latin Bridge marks the site of Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassination in 1914.
Once a medieval Bosnian royal seat, Jajce stands where the Pliva River cascades directly through the centre of town. Visitors can see the 14th-century fortress, catacombs carved into the rock, and the Museum of the Second AVNOJ Session, which documents Yugoslavia’s formation.
Travnik was the Ottoman vizier’s seat from the 17th to 19th centuries. The town preserves colourful mosques, traditional houses, and the old fortress on Vlasic Mountain. The nearby Plava Voda spring flows through cafes serving local dishes like cevapi and burek.
