Best Time to Travel: Spring (April–May) & Autumn (September–October)

Slovakia has the highest density of castles per capita in the world. Within a few hours’ drive, you can transition from the medieval stone towers of Spiš Castle to the alpine meadows of the High Tatras. Explore the subterranean ice caves of the Slovak Paradise, peep into the painted wooden houses of Čičmany, and watch the Danube flow past the four-towered crown of Bratislava’s hilltop castle.
Discover Slovakia
Bratislava became the Hungarian coronation city after the Ottoman capture of Buda in 1541. Its landmarks include Bratislava Castle, rebuilt 1953–1968 on a 9th-century site; St. Martin’s Cathedral (consecrated 1452); and the pink-facaded Primate’s Palace (built 1778–1781) known for being the site of the peace treaty between Austria and France in 1805.
Founded in the 13th century, Banska Stiavnica was once a leading European silver-mining centre. The 16th-century Old Castle and the New Castle (1564–1571) overlook Renaissance burgher houses. The town’s mining academy, established 1762, was the world’s first higher education institution dedicated to mining.

The Tatra Mountains straddle Slovakia’s northern border, with trails linking Strbske Pleso, Tatranska Lomnica, and Poprad. Peaks such as Gerlachovsky stit (2,655 m) and Lomnicky stit (2,634 m) are accessible by guided routes or cable car. The national park was founded in 1949 to protect glacial lakes and alpine flora.
