Best Time to Travel: Late Spring, Summer & Autumn (May–October)

Small in size, but vast in soul, Slovenia is where the Julian Alps mirror themselves in emerald glacial lakes. Within an hour, you can move from the soaring peaks of Triglav National Park to the Venetian-style salt pans of the Adriatic coast. Row a traditional pletna boat to the island church of Lake Bled, explore the subterranean Postojna Caves, and sip heavenly wines in the endless vineyards of the Vipava Valley.

Ljubljana, dating to Roman Emona (established 14 CE), evolved as a Habsburg city. Ljubljana Castle, built in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 16th, overlooks the city. Architect Joze Plecnik reshaped the capital between 1921 and 1957, designing the Triple Bridge, Central Market, and National University Library (1936–1941).
Bled Castle, first mentioned in 1011, stands 130 m above a glacial lake formed at the end of the last Ice Age. The baroque chapel was added in 1700, and the museum traces settlement back to 1000 BCE. Traditional pletna boats row visitors to the island church of St. Mary (rebuilt 1698).
Postojna Cave, explored since 1818, contains 24 km of limestone passages and a 140-year-old electric railway (opened 1884). Nearby Skocjan Caves, a UNESCO site since 1986, feature a 146 m deep underground canyon and archaeological traces of human presence from 5,000 BCE.
