Best Time to Travel: Spring (April–June)

Hungary’s landscapes range from the Great Plain (Alfold) to the volcanic hills of Tokaj and the thermal springs beneath Budapest. Its architecture spans Roman military sites, Gothic cathedrals, and Austro-Hungarian palaces, all within a country smaller than Victoria. Explore Budapest’s 19th-century boulevards, Roman ruins in Aquincum, and wine cellars dating to the 1500s. Cruise the Danube, soak in Ottoman-era thermal baths, and walk medieval lanes in Pecs and Sopron.
Discover Hungary
Budapest merged Buda, Pest, and Obuda in 1873, creating today’s capital. Highlights include the Gothic Revival Parliament Building (completed 1904), the Chain Bridge (1849, rebuilt 1949), Buda Castle (13th century, rebuilt 18th century), and the Gellert Thermal Baths (1918). The Roman ruins of Aquincum (founded 89 CE) lie in northern Obuda.
Pecs, settled by Romans as Sopianae, preserves a 4th-century necropolis with Christian tombs, a UNESCO site. Later structures include the 11th-century Cathedral of Sts Peter and Paul and the 16th-century Pasha Qasim Mosque, now a church. The Zsolnay Quarter showcases ceramics made since 1853.

Eger’s 13th-century fortress withstood the Ottoman siege of 1552. Today, the town is known for its 18th-century Baroque basilica and Turkish minaret (40 m, built 1610–1617). Nearby Szepasszony Valley contains 200 wine cellars producing Egri Bikaver (Bull’s Blood) since the 19th century.
