Best Time to Travel: Spring (April–June) & Autumn (September–October)

Azerbaijan bridges the Caspian and the Caucasus. It is the meeting place of Persian, Turkic, and Russian influences. Its attractions range from Zoroastrian fire temples to modern architecture, with desert plains in the east and alpine valleys in the northwest. Explore its walled cities, Caspian shorelines, and mountain villages. Walk through Baku’s medieval Icherisheher, visit the mud volcanoes of Gobustan, and trace Silk Road caravans through Sheki’s khan palaces.
Discover Azerbaijan
Baku’s UNESCO-listed walled city dates to the 12th century and includes the Maiden Tower, Shirvanshah’s Palace, and caravanserais that once hosted Silk Road traders. Surrounding boulevards showcase early oil-boom architecture and the Flame Towers, symbols of modern Azerbaijan.
Southwest of Baku, Gobustan National Park contains 6,000+ petroglyphs etched into sandstone between 5,000 and 40,000 years ago, depicting hunting scenes, ritual dances, and boats. The nearby mud volcanoes release methane gas and mineral clay, forming an otherworldly landscape.
The Ateshgah, a 17th-century Zoroastrian temple near Surakhani, once drew pilgrims to its natural gas-fed flames. A few kilometres away, the hillside of Yanardag (“Burning Mountain”) still burns continuously from escaping subterranean gas.
