Bulgaria is at the meeting point of Europe and the Balkans. The country is shaped by Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman legacies. Its archaeological sites, medieval frescoes, and highland monasteries are set amid rivers, mountains, and fertile plains. Explore 2nd-century Roman theatres, 9th-century monasteries, and Thracian tombs dating back over 2,500 years. Take a stroll in Plovdiv’s cobbled lanes, hike the Rila Mountains, and taste wines from the Thracian Valley.
Discover Bulgaria
Founded in the 6th century BCE, Plovdiv was once a Thracian settlement, later a Roman and Byzantine centre. Visit the 2nd-century Roman Theatre still used for performances, the Ottoman-era Dzhumaya Mosque, and 19th-century Bulgarian Revival houses along the Old Town’s cobblestones.
Sofia, founded as Serdica in the 1st century CE, mixes Roman ruins beneath its metro stations with Orthodox domes above. See the 4th-century Rotunda of St George, the gold-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (completed 1912), and the archaeological remains under Largo Square.
The Seven Rila Lakes, located between 2,100 m and 2,500 m altitude, are glacial formations accessible by cable lift and short hikes. Pirin National Park, a UNESCO site, has beautiful alpine trails past marble peaks and glacial cirques.
